Benjamin Banneker Park Parasitoid Wasp Release

A NOTICE FROM ARLINGTON COUNTY PARKS

Dear Arlington East Falls Church Residents:

The forestry and natural resources section of Parks and Recreation is releasing a USDA-approved biological control, to fight the spread of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). EAB is killing our native ash trees, and you may have seen dead ash trees in your local parks. Fairfax County has been releasing biocontrol insects like this for the past 2 years, and we are now included in the program, as well. We will be releasing the first batch of these in Benjamin Banneker Park tomorrow (May 17, 2023).   You can learn more at the following link:

https://www.aphis.usda.gov/publications/plant_health/faq_eab_biocontrol.pdf

We are happy to take questions.

We need you for the 2023 City Nature Challenge, April 28 – May 1!

We are hoping to recruit a record number of people this year to make at least one observation of nature using iNaturalist, during the City Nature Challenge, April 28-May 1, 2023.

What is the City Nature Challenge?
What started out as a friendly competition between LA and San Francisco in 2016 to document urban nature using iNaturalist, has expanded to over 450 cities in 40 countries this year. ARMN is again helping to organize participation in the City Nature Challenge DC, encompassing the entire DC metro area, including 14 counties in Virginia, 5 counties in Maryland and Jefferson County in West Virginia.

iNaturalist observations create a global database that provides valuable information about the world’s biodiversity. In 2022, out of the world-wide competition, the DC area came in first in the number of identifiers, second in the number of observers, fifth in the number of observations and seventh in the number of species identified. We’re hoping to build on that incredible record again this year!

Who can participate and where?
ARMN is supporting a wide variety of observation events in Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church and Fairfax.  There are plenty of locations and times to choose from, or just go out and explore and make observations in your favorite park. Invite your friends and families to become citizen scientists and participate; all ages and levels of expertise are welcome. The more eyes on the ground and up in the sky the better. Join the fun, and contribute to the collection of data, to see which city can engage the most participants, make the most observations and identify the most species.

Where to learn more and sign up?

On Missing Middle Study and Expanded Housing Options (EHO)

Over 200 citizens -- old, young, renters, homeowners, newcomers and lifelong residents -- showed up to share their views and perspectives with the Arlington County Board during the Public Comment period at the March 18th County Board Meeting.  More will speak at the Recessed Meeting scheduled for 6:30 PM on March 21st.  The County Board will then consider what they have heard, deliberate on the proposed zoning changes (now called Expanded Housing Options), and vote.   A video of the March 18th meeting can be found under the News Tab.

UPDATE:   The EHO changes to the zoning ordinance were approved 5-0 on Wednesday March 22.  The meeting can be viewed HERE

I recommend watching the final 30 minutes during which each of our Board members summed up their reasons for voting Yes and shared important thoughts on where we go from here.

Langston Blvd Alliance 10 Yr Anniversary

On February 4th, the Langston Blvd. Alliance (LBA) celebrated its 10th year in action with a brunch for the Presidents of the Civic Associations in the Langston Boulevard Corridor (Rosslyn to East Falls Church).  Also attending were former County Board Member Mary Hynes and current County Board Member and liason to LBA, Matt DiFerrante,  as well as the County's lead planner for the Plan Langston Boulevard project, Natasha Alfonso-Ahmed.   Among various speakers were LBA founders Sandi Chesrown and Ginger Brown who together presented a number of proposed revisions to the latest draft of Plan Langston Blvd.   The draft Plan can be reviewed online. Plan Langston

You may also visit the webpage of Langston Boulevard Alliance for  more information about the origins of the Plan.

  Langston Blvd Alliance

As Arlington-East Falls Church (and Cherrydale) have developed their own Area Plans, they will not be included in the site specific recommendations of Plan Langston Blvd.  However, the AEFCCA is committed to working with Arlington County, the City of Falls Church, the AEFCCA community, and other communities of the Langston Blvd Corridor to see how best we can move towards our many shared goals.
